SITE WASTE MANAGEMENT PLANS (SWMPS)

About

Since 6th April 2008 it has been a legal requirement for all construction projects in England with a value over £300,000 to have a SWMP. A more detailed plan is required for construction projects over £500,000.

These plans are designed to encourage better waste management practices, improve environmental performance, reduce the cost of waste disposal and reduce waste crime, such as fly-tipping which costs over £100m per year to deal with in the UK.

Both local authorities and the Environment Agency have the power to enforce the SWMP Regulations. Both BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes require a compliant SWMP containing certain information. Penalties for not preparing and implementing a SWMP in line with SWMP regulations includes a £300 fixed penalty notice or up to £50,000 fine if found guilty.

Eco Energy and Environmental can prepare and implement a SWMP using the BRE SMARTWaste Plan, which will ensure full compliance with SWMP Regulations.

We will guide you through the 9 steps of Preparing, Implementing and Reviewing your SWMP to enable full compliance with SWMP Regulations 2008, as well as assisting you in measuring and reducing the waste generated by your project.

Stage 1 - Preparation

  • Identify responsibilities for preparation and implementation of the SWMP
  • Record all design, waste management and minimisation decisions
  • Forecast waste types & quantities
  • Identify waste management options/routes (Reduce/Reuse/Recycle/Recover/Dispose)

Stage 2 - Implementation

  • Duty of Care: Identify waste management services & contractors
  • Training & communication of the SWMP
  • Measurement of actual waste arising onsite
  • Monitor implementation of SWMP

Stage 3 - Review

  • Carry out post-construction SWMP review
